Mineral nutrition for ruminants

Mineral supplementation is mandatory for ruminants farmers looking for high performances. Most of this supplementation is done through the feed: within the TMR, inside the complementary feed or even distributed directly as a feedthrough on top of the diet. However, in a lot of situations, providing the correct mineral nutrition is not easy to do:

Outside when cattles are grazing
For small group of animals such as heifers or dry cows
When cattles show high production levels

Moreover, animal needs vary according to their genetic potential, age, and stage of production. Ruminants producing higher quantity of milk or having a higher ADG will need more nutrients and minerals than other producing less. However, ruminant operations often use one diet for all animals in that group, regardless of individual needs. As a consequence, some of the animals will suffer from nutrient deficit, which penalizes the expression of their potential.

Another solution for ruminants is Wisium’s My Rumidiag. One of the best ways to evaluate the quality of cow digestion is to evaluate the dung. This process consists of washing and screening, dung and observing undigested residues. This common practice in farm is restrictive and unpleasant.
My RumiDiag makes it possible to obtain a clear indicator of quality of digestion in one minute. The farmer then optimizes his working time, the quality of his production and the well-being of his animals.

How does My Rumidiag work?

The farmer or advisor take pictures of a defined number of dungs, in relation to the size of the herd. They also provide information on the presence of corn kernels and mucus present in or on the dung. Each picture is analyzed by an artificial intelligence engine trained to rate dung pictures, in relation to the risk of subclinical acidosis. Once you are connected to the Internet, the result is immediate and the risk of subacidosis of the herd is displayed. The farmer and their advisor can now discuss the levers for improvement.
My RumiDiag is very simple and fast to use. The application can, therefore, be regularly used to assess the impact of changing feeding practices, on ruminant digestion. This allows the farmer to have a reliable and objective indicator. No more washing / sieving the dung!
